Andhra Pradesh joins the elite group to host the Directorate of Radiation Safety (DRS) for the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). The Department of Health, Medical & Family Welfare (HM & FW), Government of Andhra Pradesh, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with AERB today to formally set up the DRS which shall be housed at Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam. The recognition plaque was handed over by Dr. Avinash U. Sonawane, Head, Directorate of Regulatory Affairs & Communications, AERB to Dr. Jitendar Kumar Sharma, MD & CEO, AMTZ and Dr. (Smt.) Poonam Malakondaiah, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Health, Medical & Family Welfare, Government of Andhra Pradesh in the august presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri N. Chandra Babu Naidu.
AERB has a mandate to ensure that the use of ionizing radiation and nuclear energy in India does not cause undue risk to health and the environment. Under this agreement, the Directorate staff shall be supported and trained by AERB to undertake regulatory inspections and verify compliance of the various x-ray installations in the state. With the setting up of DRS at AMTZ, the manufacturers of radiological equipment shall be immensely benefited towards certifications for their products. The safety in hospitals is set to get a boost with this initiative.
