Medical devices testing lab to be set up in MedTech Zone
The Medical Devices Park that is coming up in the district will have about 250-300 medical devices manufacturing units, according to Jitendra Kumar Sharma, CEO of Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ).
He was speaking at the signing of an MoU between the State government and TUV Rheinland (India) Private Limited, an Indian subsidiary of the German firm, here on Friday.
“There is immense potential for import substitution, and at a later stage for exports also, of medical devices in India as 80% of the devices are being imported at present, said Thomas Fuhrmann, CEO and MD of TUV Rheinland (India) Private Limited. TUV will be setting up a medical devices testing lab in the Medical Devices Park, which is coming up in an extent of 270 acres. Mr. Fuhrmann further said his company had been awarded the contract to set up and operate the laboratory with facilities for testing electro-magnetic interference (EMI/EMC), anechoic chambers, bio-material reliability and electrical safety. “The State government would provide the land, two acres or so, in the park and we have to invest roughly about ₹100 crore on the lab,” he said.
He also lauded the efforts of the State government in setting up the park, which would give a great boost to the sector in the State and in the country.
Vice-president of the company Kalyan Verma said: “Availability of world-class testing facilities within the Medical Devices Park will make it easier for the manufacturers to improve quality. It will reduce logistics cost and the manufacturers can get their products tested within the park in accordance with the new Medical Devices Rules, 2017, coming into force from January 1, 2018.” The testing lab would be ready by next year.
