World Health Organisation has selected Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ), which is setting up medical devices manufacturing unit near Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, to host its pre-qualification cell for in vitro diagnostics (IVD). The programme of WHO is aimed at promoting and facilitating access to safe, appropriate and affordable in vitro diagnostics of good quality in an equitable manner.
It focuses on in vitro diagnostics for priority diseases such as HIV, malaria, hepatitis B and C and their suitability to use in resource-limited settings. It undertakes a comprehensive assessment of in vitro diagnostics through a standardised procedure.
IVD is the first of its kind in South East Asia. The cell at AMTZ was officially announced by WHO during the first World Conference on Access to Medical Products and International Laws for Trade and Health in New Delhi on Wednesday. A citation plaque was presented by WHO to AP Principal Secretary, Health, Medical and Family Welfare Poonam Malakondaiah and APTZ Managing Director and CEO Jitendar Sharma.
